                                     THE BISSONET HANDBOOK

Students and parents are responsible for being familiar with all regulations in this handbook.  Each family may refer to it if there are questions regarding regulations.

Realizing that not everything can be covered in a handbook, the administration reserves the right to interpret any rule in the handbook or to make a judgment in any situation that might occur not covered in this handbook.

ACCIDENTS/INJURIES - INSURANCE

The school makes available student insurance plan that may be purchased from a company that is contracted with the Jefferson Parish School System.  Enrollment in the plan is not compulsory but is encouraged.

                                                                      ARRIVAL/DISMISSAL

The school staff begins duty at 8:00 A.M.  Students may enter the school campus following the 8:00 A.M. bell and not before.  (Please do not drop students off at the fence before 8 A.M., as this is not safe.)  All students should enter through the gates near the office. Students or parents should not use the bus gates or teacher parking lot for entry to the school grounds.

The morning bell schedule is:

  8:00 A.M.  ARRIVAL BELL  (breakfast served from 8:00 – 8:25)

  8:25 A.M.  (Get Ready Bell)

  8:30 A.M.  SCHOOL DAY BEGINS

  8:35 A.M.  TARDY BELL

  3:20 P.M.  SCHOOL DAY ENDS

Students arriving after 8:35 are considered tardy and must report to the office for a pass.  A parent must accompany the student to the office for a tardy slip.  Repeated tardiness will result in disciplinary action.

Students may not be called from classes after 2:30 p.m.   Parents should wait for students on or close to the deck.  Please do not wait in the area near the front steps.  Do not go to the classrooms or remove students from moving lines.  Your cooperation in this matter is required in order to ensure the safety of all children.

All students and parents should exit through the gates near the office.  Do not use the bus circle or teachers' parking lot.

IMPORTANT:  Students must know after school plans before arriving at school each day.  If a parent calls during the day with a change of plans for a student’s after school plans, the school staff cannot guarantee that your child will always get the correct message.  A consistent schedule is an excellent way to assure that your child will always know where to go at dismissal.  Students will not be allowed to call home to arrange for after school activities.

The drive through circle is the only designated area for picking up and dropping off children.  The students who will be walking home into the neighborhood will cross the street with the crossing guard in front of the school. There will be no street parking in front of the school during arrival and dismissal times.  Students will wait in lines inside the fenced area to be picked up.  No students will be allowed to walk in the direction of Sav-A-Center unless accompanied by an adult.  Parents who choose to pick up their child in the drive-through must have a sign displaying the name of the student being picked up.  The child’s name should be written in bold print.  The sign should be held up to the windshield when approaching the driveway.  An adult, usually the principal or assistant principal, will call for the student to come to the driveway.  If you need assistance with a sign for your child, please contact the office.

ATTENDANCE

State law and the school district policy dictate the attendance requirements.  Students must be present at least 160 days during the school year to be eligible to receive credit for courses taken.  (17 unexcused absences are allowed)

Excused absences are:

  1. A student must bring a verification of illness from a medical   doctor and/or verification of extenuating circumstances within five (5) days of the absence.
  2. Extended hospital stay as verified by a physician.

Extended recuperation from an accident as verified by a physician

  1. Extended contagious disease within a family as verified by a physician.
  2. Prior school system approved travel for education (see principal).
  3. Death in the family (not to exceed 1 wk).
  4. Natural catastrophe and/or disaster.
  5. Please read the full school system policy in the booklet, "Procedures and Policies for Parents and Students."

NOTE:  All student absences from school, whether excused or unexcused, will disqualify a student from receiving the perfect attendance award, unless the student is attending a school related function.

Students who are absent 1 or 2 days should get homework or makeup work from a buddy or from the teacher upon return.  For longer absences, (3 days or more) the parent may wish to pick up work at the school.  In order that instruction is not interrupted, teachers must be given at least 24 hours notice for gathering books and assignments.  You may call the office and request make-up work and pick it up the following afternoon. When a student is absent, an automated phone system will call your home to report the absence.  This procedure reminds the family of the importance of regular school attendance and asks that you contact the school to inform us of the reason for the student’s absence.  (Please be sure that the school has your correct phone number.)

Once a student arrives at school, he or she is expected to remain and attend the full school day.  If it is absolutely necessary that a student leave early, a person listed on the emergency card (with identification) must sign the student out in the office before the student will be allowed to leave the campus.  No student will be called from the classroom after 3:00 due to dismissal preparations.

Early checkouts are discouraged.  Please schedule appointments after school.  If your child leaves early, he/she is missing valuable classroom instruction, which could result in poor academic performance. Early checkouts are also reported as part of the attendance record.

BUS TRANSPORTATION

The parish provides bus transportation for students residing in the school's boundary district.  The school will provide parents with the driver's phone number to discuss pick up and drop off times.

Appropriate behavior on the bus is mandatory.  Students are bound by the rules of that bus driver.  Violations are referred to the administrators at the school who have the authority to suspend any student and prohibit his or her transportation by bus.

CUSTODY ISSUES

All students involved in custody issues must have legal documents on file in the office.  It is the responsibility of the parent to provide updated copies as changes occur.  This will enable us to follow the court orders.  In questionable situations, we will refer to our legal counsel.

DRESS POLICY

It is the responsibility of the parent to secure appropriate clothing for the student.  In the event that a student is not in uniform, a parent will be notified to provide proper uniform.  Bissonet Plaza requires all students to wear the school uniform.  Uniforms consist of navy blue pants, shorts, or skirts/jumpers, with a white or red collared shirt with sleeves.  Bissonet Plaza emblem is optional.  Belts must be worn and shirts must be tucked in.  Shoes should be flat such as tennis shoes or loafers and must tie, buckle or Velcro.  No slippers, thongs, etc. are acceptable.  BASEBALL CAPS ARE NOT ALLOWED.  Hats and sunglasses may not be worn in classrooms.  Students must wear tennis shoes on the P.E. days.  No hoop earrings or other dangling jewelry may be worn.  Girls should not wear make-up or body glitter.

EMERGENCY CARDS

All students must have accurate information on the emergency card.  It is the responsibility of the parent to inform the office of any changes of information.  Without current and accurate information, the school is impeded in initiating immediate action in an emergency.  Only persons listed on the emergency card will be allowed to check out a student from school.

FIELD TRIPS

Students who wish to participate in field trips must have a permission slip (signed by parent or guardian) and pay for admittance/transportation costs. Signed permission slip and payment for field trip must be turned in by the deadline in order for a student to participate in the fieldtrip. Once payment is made, refund is not guaranteed if the student is unable to attend the fieldtrip.

Chaperones of field trips are not allowed to bring other children along.  It is understood that persons volunteering to chaperone will pay their admittance/transportation fee and will remain with the class for the entire trip.  If this is NOT the case, teachers should be notified in advance so that proper arrangements may be made.  Chaperones are expected to dress appropriately for school functions.

Students not following rules of conduct at school may not be allowed to participate in field trips.  This will be up to the discretion of the teacher in consultation with the principal and parents.

Students are discouraged from bringing large amounts of cash or valuables (cassette players, tapes, etc) on field trips.

HALF DAYS / EARLY RELEASE DAYS

Half-day dismissal is at 11:55 A.M. No lunch will be served.  Buses will run their regular routes.

Early release day for staff development will dismiss at 1:15 p.m. Lunch will be served prior to dismissal.  The buses will run their regular routes.

Childcare is available; pre-registration by deadline date is required.

ILLNESS

If a student complains of illness or suffers an accident, the persons listed on the emergency card will be called.  IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT THAT THIS CARD IS KEPT UP TO DATE.  If you change jobs or move, please call the office or send a blank card to update information.

Students with fever, suspected "pink" eye, lice, or symptoms of a contagious disease are not allowed to remain at school.  Parents are asked to inform the teacher and the office of any special circumstances (allergies, illnesses, custody problems), which may have a bearing on the child's safety and welfare.

INTERIM REPORTS

Interim reports are issued during the 5th week of the nine weeks.  Not all students will receive these progress reports; they are required for students showing significant difficulty with the course of study.

LICE

Students must be treated and be free of any nits or lice upon returning to school.  Parents should sign and return statement indicating that treatment has occurred and that all nits have been removed from the hair.  It is recommended that the student’s hair be checked by office personnel prior to returning to the classroom.

LOST ARTICLES

All books, school bags, lunch kits, and clothing should be marked with the student's complete name.  Purses and wallets should have some form of identification.

A lost and found box is located in the cafeteria.  Items not claimed during the school year are donated to a charitable organization.

Parents are responsible for the replacement cost of lost books or textbooks.  Refunds are made if the lost books are located.  Report cards will be held until accounting is clear.

LUNCHES

School lunches are available to all students.  Students may also choose to bring a bag lunch.  It is recommended that parents provide nutritional beverage choices when providing student’s lunch. No glass thermos bottles, canned or bottled drinks are allowed in the cafeteria for safety reasons. School lunch prices are as follows:

                Breakfast:  75¢

               Reduced price breakfast: 30¢

               Lunch: $1.25

               Reduced lunch price: 40¢

                Extra milk:  25¢

Applications for free/reduced lunches are available in the office. If a child does not qualify for free lunch, it is recommended that parents pay in advance for lunches.  When the student has used all prepaid lunches, the parent will be notified.  Students will not be permitted to have charges totaling more than $5.00.  If students do not have money to pay for lunches, the cafeteria will provide an alternate lunch until cafeteria debt is paid.

MEDICATION

Jefferson Parish Public School System has a strict medication policy.  If a student must take medication (even over the counter) parents should:

1.  Notify the office

2.  Submit form #35 (available in office) signed by the doctor

3.  Submit form #36 (available in office) signed by the PARENT

4.  Deliver the medicine to the office in the labeled prescription bottle.

Trained staff will administer medication according to physician’s orders.

Parents should never send any type of medication (cough drops, aspirin, Tylenol, cream/ointment) with a child.  Sending medication is strictly against the medication policy.  Should a child need medication for a short period of time, a parent/guardian may administer the medication during school time by bringing the medication to school and the office staff will call the student to the office.  Please read the complete medication policy in the Jefferson Parish Procedures and Policies Book.

PARENT CONFERENCES

Parent conference days are scheduled at the end of the 1st and 3rd nine weeks grading period. Parents should schedule appointments for conferences with the teacher.  Phone conferences can be requested; teachers will return calls during non-instructional times.

PARTY POLICY

Safety is of utmost concern to the Bissonet Elementary School community.  Due to safety concerns during school classroom parties, the following policy will be enforced.  In the past we have had a large number of visitors on the campus during classroom parties.  It is extremely difficult to monitor the campus.  Your understanding and cooperation of the following policies will help provide a safer, more secure environment for your child as well as the entire school.

  • Parents/Volunteers are welcome to attend the classroom party if they have been invited and agree to help with the party.  The room mother and teacher will determine how many parents are needed and a list of parents/volunteers will be provided to the office.  Only the names of parents/volunteers who are helping will be on the list.  The room mother and teacher will rotate the parents/volunteers who are interested in helping with the parties.  If you are interested in helping, you are encouraged to contact the room mother.

  • All visitors to the school must enter through the front gate and sign in at the office.  No one is allowed to be in the school without a visitor pass.  Teachers have been instructed to question anyone without a visitor pass.

  • Only students who are registered at Bissonet Plaza Elementary are allowed to attend a school party.  No siblings or friends are allowed.  Parents are encouraged to make arrangements for other children prior to the party.

PERSONAL ITEMS

Personal items such, as toys, radios, etc. should not be brought to school.  The school will not be responsible for their loss nor will the school conduct lengthy investigations to locate such items.  Young children tend to lend or give away their belongings and getting them back is a problem.  Knives, metal combs, pins, needles, toy guns, firecrackers, and other objects should not be brought to school. Any items that can be used as weapons, or are facsimiles of such may result in suspension for the remainder of the school year.

REPORT CARDS

Progress of students is reported 4 times during the year in 9-week periods.  Report cards are issued 5 days after the end of the reporting period.  Keep the report card; sign and return the envelope as soon as possible.

SCHOOL PICTURES

Pictures are offered 3 times during the year.  Fall pictures are traditional and are used for the yearbook; spring pictures may have a prop or gimmick; Santa pictures are taken just before the Thanksgiving Holidays.  Make ups are held only for fall pictures.

                                                                       SCHOOL SUPPLIES

Each student is required to have the necessary supplies for full participation in classroom activities such as writing paper, pencils, notebooks, colors or markers.  School supplies list suggested by the teachers of each grade level are available in the office and on the school website.  Please mark all holders or zipper cases.

                                                      STUDENT BEHAVIOR

. PBS Overview

Positive Behavior Support (PBS) is a general term that refers to the application of positive interventions and system changes to achieve socially important behavior change.  PBS is an application of a behaviorally-based systems approach to enhance the capacity of schools, families, and communities.  Its goal is to design effective environments that improve the relationship between research-validated practices and the environments in which teaching and learning occur.  The focus is on creating and sustaining school environments that improve lifestyle results (personal, health, social, academic, etc.) for all students by making problem behavior less effective, efficient and relevant, while making desired behavior more functional.  The use of culturally appropriate interventions is strongly emphasized.

Bissonet Expectations and Rules

Bissonet Plaza Elementary School has devised three school wide expectations.  They are be respectful, be responsible and be safe.  These expectations were developed by the faculty. These expectations are in line with the school’s mission statement and are presented to the school along with specific behaviors for each expectation. Please see the attached chart listing the specific behaviors for each area of the campus. The expectations are placed on posters campus wide and inside the classrooms. Students are given daily incentives and rewards for following the Bissonet expectations.   Everyday on the Morning Show, which is heard throughout the school; our students are encouraged and reminded to demonstrate expected positive behaviors in each area of the school.  Each week a different area is highlighted and discussed.  The Morning Show crew includes students and the counselor.

Bissonet Mission Statement

“Learning everyday all we really need to succeed”

Faculty Commitment

During regularly scheduled PBS team meetings, held every month, the PBS team members will meet to discuss behavior problems occurring across campus.  The team will actively problem solve with positive solutions to rectify the situations.  Monthly, teachers will discuss problems that are affecting student learning both in the classroom and in outside areas of the campus.  As a grade level the teachers will discover alternative ways to rectify the problem.  These problems will then be shared with the PBS team.  At that time the PBS team members will begin to develop ongoing ways to diminish problematic school behavior.  Throughout the year faculty will also be given the opportunity to monitor the progress of the interventions used to decrease targeted negative behavior, through the use of data and surveys.  In the event that said intervention is not working, new ones will be put in their place.  This whole program is a work in progress and will be revisited and modified as needed to increase desired behavior.

PBS Reward/ Incentives

Bissonet Bucks/ Awards Store

2009-2010

Faculty will use Bissonet Bucks to reward those students who are demonstrating any of the three school wide expectations.  Those expectations are being respectful, being responsible and being safe also know as the “3 B’s”  Once a student receives a “Beaver Reward Buck” they will sign the back of the buck and place it into their special bag or place that the teacher has designated. The students will collect their Bissonet Bucks until they have earned enough to purchase prizes at the Bissonet Buck Store.

A beautiful display case housed in the cafeteria will showcase all of the prizes.  The PTO regularly donates treats and prizes for our students who demonstrate good behavior.  Everyday the students will have an opportunity to view the prizes that they can earn.  Every Thursday during homeroom the students will have an opportunity to purchase their individual prize.  In every classroom there are posters listing the types of prizes and cost.  The prizes are divided by five levels.  Students will need 20 Beaver Bucks to purchase items from “Level One”.  Students will need 30 Beaver Bucks to purchase from “Level Two”.  Students will need 40 Beaver Bucks to purchase from Level Three.  Students will need 60 Beaver Bucks to purchase from Level 4.  If students prefer to save their bucks throughout the year they will have an opportunity to pick from an assortment of toys that are showcased in the display case. This will give them the opportunity to choose from Level Five. They need to earn 400 Beaver Bucks  in order to qualify for Level Five prizes.   Every Thursday the student will have an opportunity to shop for prizes.  After the students have selected their prize their teacher will turn in their student’s purchase order for that week to their PBS grade chair.  The PBS grade chair will send the list to the counselor on Friday before noon.   After the orders have been filled the prizes will be brought to the classes for distribution by Monday of the following week.

Bracelet Ceremony

This year Bissonet is targeting and rewarding students who are showing positive behavior by giving encouraging incentives and reward.  As we reward those students who are making good choices with their behavior their academic success should increase.  Students who are not making good choices will see the rewards that will be given to those students which should motivate them to make different choices about their behavior.  Students will learn that making good choices concerning their behavior will earn Bissonet Bucks, prizes, extra recess, treats and bracelets as well as special privileges.

Every nine week period a “Bracelet Ceremony” will take place.  Those students who have earned the reward will be acknowledged in front of the entire grade level with a special certificate, Star Pencils and invitation to attend the reward party.  Students who have been demonstrating the “3 B’s”, which are being safe, being responsible and being respectful, will have an opportunity to participate in special events at school, movies, treats as well as receiving  many other fun rewards at school.   After the nine week period is over the students will begin receiving weekly special treats, or special privileges. Procedure and documentation for tracking of students who earn enough points to qualify for the Awards Ceremony

A reporting system has been established school wide so that every teacher or assistant is aware of their students’ behavior in all areas of the school.

Students must meet a certain criteria to qualify for a “Bracelet”.  Teachers will document student’s daily behavior on special behavior log sheets.  This information will be transferred to a behavior chart that is posted in every classroom.  Students will be able to monitor their weekly progress toward achieving their goal of earning a “Bracelet”. During the first and second nine weeks, students must have four out of five days of good behavior in all of their classes for eight out of the nine week period. During the third and fourth nine week period, students must have four out of five days of good behavior in all of their classes for nine out of nine week periods.  Any student who receives a suspension will automatically be disqualified from receiving a “Bracelet”.  Students must demonstrate following the 3 B’s in all areas of the school such as cafeteria, PE, walking to and from class, waiting in the bus line and playing at recess.

A reporting system has been established school wide so that every teacher or assistant has input into the process. Cafeteria monitors have log books for each grade in which they keep the names of any students who are not following the rules in the cafeteria.  During PE the teachers will record any student who is not following the rules.  The names of these students will be given to each teacher on a daily basis.  The homeroom teacher uses this information to score their student’s behavior for the week.  If the students have appropriately behaved in all areas of the school for at least four days in that week they will earn a check for that week.  The students understand that they must earn 8 out of 9 possible checks for the first two nine week periods and 9 out of 9 during the second nine week period in order to qualify for the Bracelet Ceremony. Every new nine week period the reward system will start anew as students earn and accumulate their number of good weeks to qualify for their rewards.

Individual Classroom Incentives or Rewards

that are given by their classroom teacher

In addition to the School Wide PBS Rewards each classroom teacher will establish rewards for their students who are displaying good behavior. The classroom teacher will reward their students with special treats or activities.  Examples of these activities include: extra recess, free computer time, popcorn, freeze pops, games, special privileges in the class and so forth.

Students become eligible for these rewards when they have 4 out of 5 days of good behavior in their individual teacher’s class.  This will give an opportunity for the students who have not received a Bracelet for the past nine week period to receive a reward for the improved classroom behavior.  The P.E. department rewards their students with “Free Friday” each week when they follow “The 3 Be’s”.  They will receive this reward each week and it is contingent only on their behavior in that particular class.  For this reward the student will have an opportunity to earn a reward for their daily behavior in their classes.  This will encourage them to work harder for their Bracelets at the Reward’s Ceremony during the next nine week period.

Rewards for wearing their PBS Bracelets Daily

PBS will encourage students to wear their bracelets daily through a weekly drawing.  Every week a student’s name will be drawn from their grade level for additional rewards.  If a student does not have on their PBS bracelet they will not be eligible to receive the prize.  Another name will be drawn from that class.  This will encourage and teach all students to value of being responsible.

WAYS FOR TEACHERS TO REWARD CHILDREN INSIDE THE CLASSROOM

  • Assign children the task of being the time keeper for an activity.  The child will be in charge of announcing the 5 minute warning near the end of the classroom activity and also announcing when the activity is over.

Project Wisdom

Bissonet is actively using the Project Wisdom program as part of their PBS requirement.  Throughout the year monthly themes will focus on positive character development.  The themes that will be covered during the year at Bissonet are as follows; Creating Success in School, Respecting Ourselves and Others, Making a Difference, Keeping a Positive Attitude, The Gift of Friendship, Stumbling Blocks or Stepping-stones, Celebrating America’s Diversity, Making Responsible Choices, Building Courage and Character, and Building a Caring Community.  Project Wisdom is character building program in which the lessons help children make wiser choices.  This program was purchased by the school to assist students with character development. It was chosen because it aims at setting a positive tone for the entire campus.  Project Wisdom tries to express to the children the importance of ethical values as well as fostering caring behavior.

The school counselor reaches all the boys and girls at Bissonet by reading the “Words of Wisdom” on the Morning Show.  The Morning Show is a news broadcast program put together by the gifted and talented students in which, the counselor has her very own segment titled, “Words of Wisdom.”  Daily students on the morning show reinforce and instruct their peers on correct behavior that needs to occur in certain areas of the school.  Students are encouraged daily to earn Beaver Bucks by making good choices concerning their academics and behavior.

Data Entry and Analysis Plan Established

Discipline referral data is entered into the computer system.  This data is analyzed by the computer which gives the team information such as; average referral per day, per month, by location, by problem behavior, by time of day, by student, and compare between years.  This information is shared with the team members during monthly meetings, through use of graphs.  This information will be used to assist the team with designing appropriate interventions to help in problematic areas.  At faculty meetings this information will be shared with the entire faculty.

Implementation of Plan

The PBS school wide plan will be implemented throughout the year.  Teachers will be in serviced on the referral process, major and minor behaviors, and consequences of infractions.  Teachers will be given lesson plans at the beginning of the school year to teach targeted behaviors throughout the year.  Teachers will be instructed on how to give out Beaver Bucks and document student’s behavior in all areas of the school.

Crisis Plan

Faculty and staff are being taught how to respond to a crisis situation.  Every classroom has a copy of the crisis plan.  The plan has been taught and review to the faculty during a training session.  Each type of crisis situation was discussed and processed so that faculty will respond appropriately. Teachers have emergency kits with student’s home information to assist them with helping students in need.

Evaluation

At various times during the year an evaluator assigned to our school will assess through survey how well our PBS plan is functioning.  The evaluator will ask teachers about the various components of PBS and whether or not they understand the mission of PBS at Bissonet.  Students will be interviewed about our PBS program.  Other items such as behavior, attendance, and morale will be considered throughout the evaluation process. This data will be shared with the committee. The school PBS committee will be evaluating their current plan to make adjustments as the needs or issues present.
